スピングラスとは？

社名の由来であるスピングラスとは、物質において電子の向き(スピン）が規則的に並んでつくられる結晶のようないわゆる安定状態ではなく、スピンがばらばらで様々な方向を向いているにもかかわらず形成される、ガラスのような準安定状態のことです。物性物理だけでなく脳神経科学など、科学の広い分野での応用が期待されています。
建築・土木・インテリア・プロダクトという枠を越えて広い意味でのデザインを行いながら、スピングラス的な繋がりや活動の場を軸にこの大きく変換していく世界に向かい合いたいと考えています。

What is Spinglass?

Spinglass is a term borrowed from physics to describe the philosophy of our architecture firm. Spinglass is the process of magnetic stabilization of atoms in the glass, each atom attempting to align itself with its neighbor. However during this process of stabilization, there is extreme competition and frustration between the atoms. Atoms In the glass scatter in many directions, interacting with others, and ultimately generating form that is exponentially more structured, while minimizing frustration. This philosophy is not limited to physics, but can also help explain other fields, such as the human sciences.

Architecture, civil engineering, interior design, and product design are the environments in which Spinglass Architects orchestrates design. Crossing over a broad base, we help facilitate a diverse group of minds from many professions, and guide the design process to generate meaningful works. It is our philosophy to make logical yet poetic realizations of the needs of our clients through the process of design.

Matsuoka Kyoko - Pricipal Architect

Matsuoka graduated from Kyushu University in 1987, received a masters degree from Tokyo Metropolitan University in 1990, and in 1991 earned a masters degree from Columbia University. In 1992, Matsuoka establish Spinglass Architects. She has worked on a variety of projects, including the Kita Kyushu Airport Connection Bridge, community based street revitalization, various housing structures in Japan, as well as furniture design. She has taught and given lectures in Japan, the United Kingdom,
France, and Taiwan. Since 2007, Matsuoka has been an associate professor at Tokyo Denki University.
